The first indication of an abnormal gift happened to the Eagle Mystic about 25 years ago.  At least this is the first that the Eagle Mystic remembers!

His uncle and aunt from California made a surprise visit in October of 1982.  There was no prior indication that they were coming, his mother looked outside and noticed that they were pulling into the driveway. It was a pleasant surprise!

His aunt said that all of a sudden her husband had decided that they should go to Colorado. So they loaded up the car... and there they were, at his house.

When people come to stay with his family, they would normally be given the use of his bedroom. There was nothing special about it, just that it was a single bed and the other bedroom had two beds which were used by his brothers.

After a few days, his uncle had a heart attack. Since the uncle had been staying in Eagle Mystic's bedroom he was sleeping in Eagle Mystic's bed when he had this heart attack.

Emergency help was called, and they took him to the hospital.

Since it had been an unannounced visit, Eagle Mystic's father had carried through with a planned hunting trip, so he had left early that morning.  Eagle Mystic was the oldest male left at the house with his mother and aunt. He felt an obligation to go to the hospital with the women. 

But he had also been preparing for a college exam the next day, so he was told by the women to stay home and get some rest.  As if he could get some rest knowing that his uncle was in the hospital due to a heart attack.

After the all the excitement he tried to get some sleep.  He was lying down in the living room, which is on the west side of the house.  The hospital was to the west. 

After some time, Eagle Mystic heard a noise coming from the window.  It sounded like something breathing heavily, maybe his father's horses breathing very heavily, as if they were running outside.  It was so real that he walked to the window and tried to look outside.  He was looking for the horses, even though it made no sense at all that they would be running right outside the window! 

The window was on the west side of the house, facing the hospital.

Next, he sat down on a beanbag chair, fully awake.  He was wondering what was going on...

Then he heard another sound.   This sound was that of a heartbeat.  At first it was strong and loud, and then it became slower and quieter.  It gradually slowed down, continually getting quieter.   Then it stopped.

The phone rang, a voice on the other end gave him the news that his uncle had died.  But the Eagle Mystic already knew it, he had heard it happen.  A man struggling to breath, gasping for breath.  Then his heart growing weaker, slowing down until it stops.

A couple of weeks later, after the funeral in California, Eagle Mystic told a nurse what he had heard.  She turned and gave him a long look.  "Your uncle died of a cardio-pulmonary embolism.   What you heard is what a doctor would have heard if he had been listening with a stethoscope." 

In today's world, everybody knows what it sounds like when a person dies, due to the popularity of hospital-based tv shows and other reality shows.  But folks, this was 25 years ago, before that was so common.
